Sailing is more than just a passion; it’s a lifestyle that demands both physical and mental strength. For me, someone who used to be an avid runner, it's time to get back into the shape I once had. I used to run every day, often covering long distances, but now even climbing stairs leaves me winded. I've likely put on around 15 kg to much, and it's time to do something about it.
Being in good shape is not just about looking good; it’s crucial for fully enjoying life and tackling the challenges that come with sailing. When you're on a boat, especially during longer trips, it's important to be fit to handle the physical demands of sailing, hoisting sails, and moving around on the vessel.
Here are some steps I plan to take to get back in shape and feel strong and energized again:
Set Realistic Goals: I'll start with small, achievable goals. Getting back into running might seem overwhelming, so I'll begin with shorter, easier sessions. Over time, I can gradually increase both the intensity and duration.
Create a Routine: To see real results, I need a regular workout routine. I plan to set up a weekly schedule with both running and strength training. This could mean running three times a week and strength training twice to complement it.
Return to Good Habits: It’s easy to fall back into old habits, but I know I need to focus on eating healthily and staying hydrated. I’ll aim for a balanced diet and avoid excess sugar.
Be Kind to Myself: I need to remind myself that progress takes time. It’s okay to have days when I’m not at my best, but I should take pride in the small steps I make. It’s important to listen to my body and not push myself too hard.
Enjoy the Journey: It’s not just about reaching the goal but also enjoying the journey. Running through nature or feeling the wind in my hair while jogging will remind me why I started in the first place.
Getting back into shape will not only improve my physical health but also my mental strength and overall enjoyment of life. I look forward to feeling strong again and being in top form for future sailing adventures and life in general. Here’s to new beginnings and a stronger version of myself!
